British welterweight contender Lee Purdy (20(13)-2-1) has been confirmed as Devon Alexander’s new opponent on May 18th after fellow Matchroom sports stablemate Kell Brook had to pull out with a foot injury. As we told you here first, Purdy was named the surprise choice after IBF #3 Kevin Bizier declined the offer, citing a lack of preparation time. Purdy was next in line, and the fight was easily made between Eddie Hearn in the UK and Golden Boy promotions CEO Richard Schaefer. The fight will be the co-feature to the Lamont Peterson versus Lucas Matthysse duel shown live on SKY in the UK and Showtime in the US. Schaefer was obviously relieved after the doomed fight faced its fourth major postponement/injury a the start of this week. Brook will apparently still face the winner of Alexander versus Purdy duel, which is taking place at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, this fall. “Devon will be fighting his mandatory against Lee Purdy,” Schaefer told ESPN late last night. “He was the next available contender based on the IBF rankings. He is promoted by Eddie Hearn. We agreed on the deal. The fight is on.”
