WBO light welterweight champion Chris Algieri (20-0, 8 KOs) expects to give WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 Kos) a great deal of problems with his footwork, jab and heart when he gets the 35-year-old fighter in the ring on November 22nd in Macao, China.
Algieri is going to use his jab to pound Pacquiao’s face while moving constantly with his fast feet to keep getting hit by his counters.
Pacquiao is going to need to rush Algieri in order to cut off the ring on him, and it’s not really a good thing to rush Algieri because he’s going to be nailing Pacquiao with jabs while he’s bum rushing him in the ring. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Pacquiao suffer a cut at some point in the fight, and we’ve seen in the past how Pacquiao struggles when he’s got blood in one of his eyes that is obscuring his vision.
“‘Alright, thank you Freddie, I got a good jab’. If 1 of the best boxing coaches in the world says you got a good jab, that’s a good thing,” Algieri said to Thaboxingvoice.com. “I got good footwork and I got heart. So that’s a problem [for Pacquiao].”
Algieri is giving away his fight strategy by talking about his jab and movement. Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach now can try and put together the perfect plan to defeat what Algieri will be trying to do in this fight on November 22nd, although I’m not sure that Roach can really come up with anything that will be useful.
If Pacquiao couldn’t handle the movement that Tim Bradley used against him in 2012, I don’t think he’s going to be able to handle the movement from Algieri now more than 2 years later. Bradley likely would have beaten Pacquiao again if he’d used his movement in their rematch last April, but instead he slugged with him for 12 rounds.
That’s got to be about the poorest plan that one could think of. Bradley came into the fight with no confidence and fought like he just wanted to make sure that when he lost, the fans wouldn’t give him too hard of a time.
“People are saying I don’t belong to be in with Manny. You will see on November 22nd that I belong to be there. I’m going to go out and be me and if I’m me, to a 100%, I’m going to win that fight,” Algieri said.
If Algieri boxes Pacquiao like he’s talking about, then I can definitely see him winning this fight and likely a lot easier than people would have ever expected
